The Quiet Strength in the Clinic Room

Today showed me that gratitude, resilience, and motivation cannot be bought. The children in clinical taught me that progress does not come from having the best equipment or endless opportunities. It comes from courage, creativity, and the willingness to keep trying even when life is difficult.

Today, I was taught that determination is not measured by the number of resources someone has, but by the attitude they choose to carry through life.

At clinic, I met several children with cerebral palsy who inspired me in ways I never expected. The families have limited access to adaptive equipment, therapies, transportation, and medical care that families back home would consider essential. Yet despite every obstacle placed in front of them, the children arrived smiling and  laughing. Playing through long appointments with a quiet strength that filled the room.

One family especially stayed with me long after we left the clinic. During their appointment, the children entertained themselves with the simplest things, finding joy in moments others might overlook. We spent time coloring and throwing sticky guys against the wall.

What struck me most was that they never complained. They did not focus on what they lacked. They simply continued to play, smile, and enjoy each moment the way every child deserves to.

As I sat there with them, I realized how easy it is to become consumed by everything in life that feels heavy. It is easy to focus on stress, exhaustion, uncertainty, or the things we wish were different. Yet this family, facing far more physical and financial challenges than most people could imagine, continued fighting for every small moment with smiles on their faces.

They reminded me that strength is not always visible. Sometimes strength is choosing to keep going. Choosing to laugh anyway. Choosing to try again tomorrow even when today was hard.

The families I met today allowed me to witness a kind of strength that I cannot fully describe. They are carrying burdens most people will never understand, yet they continue to show up every single day with love, hope, and determination.

I came to Guatemala hoping to make a difference in the lives of others, but today these families left a difference in mine.
